External Showcase (Part I):
Charles D. Dziuban (Chuck)
Director, Research Initiative for Teaching Effectiveness, University of Central Florida

Topic: Information Fluency and Online Learning in the Digital Age.

Instructional design components are increasingly important for information fluency in our college populations. Integrating how students find, evaluate and use information into the higher education curriculum challenges traditional notions of information literacy and technology literacy and critical thinking. These developments require that assessment models migrate form approaches that are objective, non contextual and non authentic to ones that are reflective, contextual and authentic. Chuck will discuss these issues in the context of the University of Central Florida’s, “What if” information fluency initiative, presenting results that signify the complexity and importance of this issue.

External Showcase (Part I): Innovative uses of technology for instructional purposes
Jeff Lebow and Jennifer Maddrell - WorldBridges.
Topic: Webcasting for Instruction, Faculty Development, and Community Communication and Collaboration.

This presentation will highlight and demonstrate the ways in which freely available connective technologies are used to facilitate communication and collaboration in the EdTechTalk.com network. EdTechTalk.com is an online collaborative platform where educators come together to share experiences, knowledge, and resources related to education and technology. The significance of EdTechTalk as a collaborative networking platform stems from free live interactive webcasts which foster an immediate and real time communication channel. Currently, ten live webcast shows are produced each week covering various education related topics. The live interactive webcast shows are hosted by a diverse mix of teachers, educational technology specialists, instructional designers, and students. Through connections made during and after webcasts, a vibrant professional development community of educators has formed where relationships center on a common passion for learning and technology. This presentation will include a discussion of how these same technologies and approaches might be used to facilitate/enhance community, instructional, and faculty development efforts within the SUNY Learning Network.

More than a buzzword, the term Web 2.0 has been used to describe changing use practices and a realization of the vision of the read/write Web. This presentation will discuss what this means to faculty and academic technology specialists in higher education. Special attention will be paid to the core concepts of participatory learning and collective intelligence, and the speaker will provide examples of the ways in which social networking, social bookmarking, mashups, photo sharing sites, and more can be used to enhance online learning.

External Showcase (Part III): Online collection of resources for the Physical, Life, and Earth Sciences
Chris Wise - Lead Designer, WGBH Teacher’s Domain, WGBH Interactive West, Boston, MA

Topic: overview of online resources available to higher ed online instructors.

Teachers’ Domain offers more than 1,000 high quality online multimedia resources to enhance students’ learning experiences in Engineering, Physical, Life, Earth and Space Sciences. The collections feature high-quality video, audio, interactives, images, and documents from public television sources such as Nova, American Experience, Frontline, Zoom, and many other programs and partners. Explanatory background articles are provided for each resource, as well as correlations to national and state education standards. SUNY has participated in the initiative to adapt Teachers’ Domain to a higher education audience. SUNY online instructional designers were invited to review and provide feedback on the Teachers’ Domain site, and I will be showing the initial results of our collaboration in the form of schematic diagrams, wireframe sketches, and design mockups. Additional feedback will be solicited to make sure that we’re on the right track.
